15 month checkup

Addie had her 15 month checkup today. And because she is still on the recovery end of the flu from last week, we held off on one of her 2 scheduled immunizations. So she and Dylan both got their flu shots and Addie also got her Chicken Pox shot. We then headed over to Rite Aid for stickers and ice cream cones. Made it all better. For me too. ;)

Here are her 15 month stats:
Weight 21#, 6oz (20th percentile)
Height 31 inches (70th percentile)
Head Circumference 47 1/2 (75th percentile)

Not surprising that her weight is down slightly after all of last week with her upset tummy and fevers, not eating like she normally does.

We go back next month for her second flu shot and the MMR immunization. More ice cream? You betcha!

4 Months

Addie had her 4 month checkup yesterday. Let's forget that I forgot about the appointment until my phone alarm reminded me AT the time of the appointment. Oopsy.

Anyways, here are her latest measurements:
weight 12# (10th percentile)
height 24.5 inches (50th percentile)
head circumference 40cm (20th percentile)

The doctor said that she looks great and that her weight, while it could be a bit higher, isn't a concern since she's holding steady on her curve. (and for the grandmas out there, I'm still going to work on fattening her up.)

She had 4 vaccinations, which came in the form of 3 shots and an oral rotavirus vaccine. She was a superstar. Dylan held her hand (since I was alone and I couldn't really distract him during her shots anyhow) and told her to be brave. They were fabulous. Made me proud to be their mama.

We need to start giving her polyvisol, a vitamin supplement that they recommend for all 4 month olds, so we'll get that.

Dylan also had a little impromptu checkup because he was getting his flu mist and he has had a pesky cough for about 2 months now. Doctor said he's fine, no infection or bronchitis. Agreed with me that Dylan should drink whole milk since he's still pretty lean for his height. And she thought that a mulivitamin for Dylan would be a good idea too when I asked about that.

Update: 2 Months

Addie had her 2 month checkup and shots today. First the stats:
Weight 8#, 6oz (5th percentile)
Height 22.25" (50th percentile)
Head circumference 37cm (5th percentile)

What does that all mean? Well, her weight is on the low end, especially since she's moving down from the curve she was following in previous visits.
The pediatrician suggested supplementing a little and see how that goes. We have a scale thankfully here at home, so we can monitor her progress and make adjustments as needed. The usual trend is to see about a 1/2 to a full ounce of weight gain a day for her age. So I'm going to shoot for that, if possible.

And the doctor mentioned slight concern for Addie's high tone, which she described as at the upper end of normal. So we need to keep an eye on that in the next few months. As an OT, of course now my radar is on high alert. Not good for the 'ol anxiety, to be honest. But I'm going to try to trust Ryan's gut instinct that she's fine, just on the 'high end of NORMAL' like he keeps reminding me.

Also, the doc took a quick peek at Dylan's scar on his nose and said it looks like it's healing nicely. So maybe that vitamin E did some good, eh?

We've been getting a few more smiles each day now from little Addie. I think we've seen a handful of them by now and Ryan and I still beam like we just won the lottery when we catch one. She's a sweetie, for certain.
But after those shots, I doubt we'll be getting too many more of those smiles tonight... Poor bug.

Kid Update

Last week both kids had their pediatrican appointments (incidently the same day we bought the new car). Dylan's was his 3-year checkup (no shots this time around). Addie's was a 1-month checkup.
Both kids did great!

Dylan's Stats:
33 pounds, 3 ounces (50-75th percentile)
39.5 inches tall (80-85th percentile)

Addison's Stats:
7 pounds, 11 ounces (10th percentile)
21.5 inches long (50-75th percentile)
35.75cm head circumference (10-25th percentile)

And another milestone to point out: Addie rolled over from her tummy to her back last night. I thought that was a bit advanced, and it is pretty early from what I read online...
Hope that doesn't mean she'll be crawling early. I need some more time to adjust to two kids before she takes off!

Urgent Care

What would you say is the most relaxing way to spend your Saturday evening? A movie on the couch? A good book? Yeah. I agree with those.
But that wasn't in the cards for us this weekend. Instead we got the privilege of going to the Urgent Care with Dylan last night, sitting in progressively smaller and dirty waiting rooms over a period of 3 1/2 hours, with a whinning toddler. Fun stuff for sure.
And if I'd have bet money that Dylan had an ear infection and we'd only see the doctor for less than 5 mintues, I'd be a bit less poor today and maybe less tired if I had gone to the doctor on Friday afternoon instead of last night's ordeal.
But in my own defense, he didn't start tugging at his ear till yesterday.
Today we are starting antibiotics and taking it easy at home.
And thankfully, Dylan slept in nicely this morning - just getting up now, nearly at noon! That's my boy!

3-foot Wonder

We had Dylan's 2 year pediatrician visit this week. Here are his stats:
Weight: 28 lb. and 1.5 oz. (50th percentile)
Height: 36.75 inches (95th percentile)
Head Circumference: 49.5 (60th percentile)

So by the standard approximation, you are supposed to double your kid's height at 2 years old for what they should be as an adult... which would put Dylan at about 6.1
Not bad. Actually that is what Ryan is, so it makes sense.

And about 10 months behind his other lateral incisors, his bottom right tooth is finally popping through. Yeah, just in time for us to actually get to ask the doctor about it, it decides to join the rest of the gang. So not only do we have a tantrum-ing toddler, we have the lovely combo of a teething AND tantrum-ing toddler during our visit. But stickers and new toys always help.

And just as the pediatrician came in to see us, Dylan decided to have a little meltdown because Daddy wanted to clean up the toys - and we had a lovely example of how much measures up to the two-year-old mold. But the good part was how she gave us suggestions on how to handle it and complimented Ryan on how he dealt with Dylan's frustration with the toys, reminding Dylan to ask for 'Help' and yielding a much less volatile toddler.

He also got his follow-up Hep A immunization shot, which was uneventful considering he had thrown that lovely tantrum earlier and then didn't cry at all with the shot. He did, however, like the fun "crayola crayon" band aid that they gave him.

And as I type this, Dylan is in his room, singing himself to sleep. My little 3 foot wonder.

Nose and Ears and Eyes, oh my!

Sunday morning Dylan woke up with his eyes 'glued shut' - and goopey, and... well, I won't gross you out. But it wasn't pretty. And he was miserable. And while we didn't know the exact diagnosis, it was clear that he had some nasty infection. Purple eyes, and one VERY fussy and unusually clingy toddler. So we called his pediatrican and got a prescription for some antibiotic eye drops until we could bring him in on Monday.
Enter Monday. I went off to work, leaving Ryan with the fun job of getting Dylan a doctor's appointment and taking the first shift of the day until I could come fly home at lunch to relieve him for his 1/2 day at work. He got a 12:40 appointment and I met my boys there. Another $30 copay.

What do we win? A set of ear infections, ladies and gentlemen!

So now we are $75 down with a sad little boy.
I've wondered over and over where on earth he could have picked up at least the eye infections... but then glanced at our blog here and remembered good 'ol Disneyland. Then Daycare. Then Make and Take. All in the past week. So there you have it. GERMS!

18 months

18 month checkup stats:
weight: 25# 1 oz. (25-50th percentile)
height: 35" (97th percentile)
head circumference: 49 1/2cm (90th percentile)

He also got his DAPT and Hep A shots. He did well with those, only crying with the second one. What a brave little boy! (and the RN was impressed).
Doctor said that he is doing well with weight and height as he is keeping on the same trends as before (percentiles staying constant), with a lean and tall body type like his daddy. Doctor said that potty training is coming up next and to think in that direction... Also, terrible-two tantrums. Fun times!

Next appointment is at 24 months. She said that at the next appointment he'll be talking in sentences. I can hardly believe that. Amazing.

15 month checkup

The stats:
weight: 23# 11oz (30-40th percentile)
height: 32.75" (90th percentile)
head: 48.5cm (80th percentile)

So, the summary (as Ryan tells it) is that we have a long, skinny kid with a big head. I like to think of it as a tall, lean, smart little boy.

We also had the pediatrican take a look at his hips because of our lingering concern for his right leg that turns inward a bit when he walks. She said that it might be something that he grows out of, but to be sure that it isn't hip dysplasia, she ordered some hip xrays. I had those done yesterday and thankfully they came back negative (which means that there isn't any structural reason for his gait pattern and we will just have to keep an eye on it). So, no surgery. Phew.

Oh, and when we told the pediatrican that Dylan has about a 10-12 word vocabulary now (between the signing and actual words), she was impressed and said that it was advanced for his age. Go figure. Just look at his daddy. He comes from a long line of geniuses.
